1 Prepare for safe work
Photograph the object, check stability and value, and test the procedure on a hidden area first. Work with ventilation, gloves, and eye and respiratory protection.
⚠ Warning: Old coatings may contain lead, and a valuable antique can lose value through improper cleaning. Have an unknown coating and serious structural damage assessed by a conservator first.
2 Determine the condition and cause
Check with a magnet and on a hidden area whether the part is solid brass, plated metal, or a lacquered surface.
3 Perform the key check
If possible, remove the hardware and save the screws. Start with a mild soap solution, then use a product suitable for the exact finish.
4 Do the repair or maintenance
Work without harsh steel wool, rinse according to instructions, dry completely, and protect with a thin layer of wax if appropriate.
? Tip: Photograph the initial state and change only one thing at a time. This makes it easier to determine what really solved the problem.
5 Test the result
Allow the adhesive, coating, or finish to dry completely according to the manufacturer, then gradually load the object and inspect the joints in good light.
