1 Confirm that the EGR is accessible for home work

Find the service manual for the exact engine. If the EGR is electronic, combined with a cooler, or deep under the intake, cleaning without proper diagnostics and tools is not a good home job.

? Tip: An EGR error can also occur due to vacuum hoses, the mass airflow sensor, or the electrical actuator; cleaning is not a universal solution.

2 Cool the engine and disconnect the battery

Work only on a completely cold engine. Photograph the connections and hoses, then disconnect the negative battery terminal if the service manual allows.

3 Remove the valve without force

Disconnect the electrical connector and accessible hoses, loosen the bolts evenly, and remove the valve. Immediately cover the intake openings with a clean cloth to prevent carbon pieces from falling into the engine.

4 Clean only the metal channels

Apply the cleaner to the carbon deposits, wait according to the instructions, and remove the softened soot with a brush. Do not submerge the electrical actuator, sensor, or plastic parts, and do not force tools into the mechanism.

⚠ Warning: Do not spray cleaner into the intake while the engine is running and do not bypass or software-disable the EGR. This can damage the engine and is not a permitted emissions system repair.

5 Install a new gasket and check operation

Clean the mating surface, install a new gasket, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Reconnect the connectors and battery, start the engine, and check for leaks and warning lights; some designs require adaptation with a diagnostic tool.
