1 Prepare for Safe Work

Unplug the tool or remove the battery, remove the work head, and clean away accessible dust. Wear eye protection and review the manual for your specific model.

Prepare for Safe Work

⚠ Warning: Never set down the planer while the drum is still spinning. Active blades can pull the tool or damage the work surface.

2 Check the Blades

Unplug the tool and inspect both blades to make sure they’re the same height, sharp, and properly oriented. Replace them in pairs.

3 Set a Shallow Pass

Start with a very shallow cut. Deep passes amplify any positioning error and tear the grain.

4 Guide the Shoe Evenly

Press the front shoe at the start, both shoes in the middle, and the rear shoe at the exit. Don’t drop the front before the blades reach full speed.

? Tip: Take a photo of the baseline, then change one thing at a time. That way you’ll know which check actually fixed the problem.

5 Reassemble, Test, and Set Limits

Reassemble the guards and attachments according to the manual and do a brief no-load test, then test on scrap wood. Strong vibration, sparks, smoke, or overheating mean you need to shut down the tool immediately.
